Toddler OOTD #25 - Marimekko Unikko baby skirt

I am a big fan of Scandinavian children's clothing. Probably because I am Scandinavian. The style, the look and the feel of the clothing just appeal to me. And if the clothing brand comes from Finland (my home country) it peaks my interest straight away. I gravitate towards them. 

I always feel a bit special sporting something nice and unique from my home country, and feel just that little bit more special when I know you can't find it from the local high street. It is the same thing with what my daughter wears - I love her to wear clothing that is from Finland. Something special, something unique, something that speaks to our heritage.

This little skirt is exactly that. It is from Marimekko, which is a very well-known design brand in Finland. As far as I know it is pretty popular in Japan as well, and had a moment of glory across the world when their Unikko fabric was used in Sex and the City program. Marimekko also do lots of beautiful plates and other kitchenware I often see in interior magazine table settings. Despite all this, in UK I find it is like a little secret no one knows about. My little secret. 

This summery little mini skirt is one of their most well known fabric designs Unikko, which stands for Poppy. This is the spring time version, with pink and yellow and light colours. The original design fabric has bright red poppies on it, which are striking, but used to be so popular in Finland at one point, practically everyone had something made with that design. It was sort of like the Finnish Burberry, if you remember that time when practically everyone in UK used to wear the Burberry stripes. Now having a rebooted version feels fresh and cute.

I've even got a piece of this fabric stashed away in some nook or corner back home - this summer I will attempt to make something out of it! Marimekko does so many beautiful children's clothes, I want some more of them too. I will soon be going to Finland for a chance to stock up...

    Gorgeous!

    I'm all about the Scandi babywear and LOVE Marimekko. It's hard to find in the UK, though we sometimes get lucky in TK Maxx. The Scandi stuff is always so bright and colourful - perfect for little children.

      I hadn't even thought that you could find Marimekko in TK Maxx... After reading this though I kept my eyes open in our local TK Maxx, and lo behold, I found the same print this skirt had, as a swimming suit! (Sadly too small for our chunky monkey, but still was pretty amazed).

      I will be going back to scout out some more...

    I love Scandi style. Especially baby clothes and home interiors. I follow so many accounts on Instagram, its a proper obsession!! This skirt is super gorgeous. The bright, vibrant colours are fab for summer and it's such a lovely shape as well. I love how you've teamed it with a plain White tee. It means all the attention is on the skirt, which is fab.       Thanks for hosting! I am a big fan of Scandinavian interiors as well - nothing beats a whitewashed floor, lots of white and light, and beautiful natural wood to give a bit of life to interiors... We have quite a Scandinavian feel going in our home too, with lots of Scandinavian tableware too :)

      I think I will try to get more of Marimekko for my little one as well soon :)

      Thanks :) I will try to get something done with the fabrics, unfortunately I am one of those people who is really excellent at planning, and coming up with ideas, but not necessarily following them through... There are so many piles of semi-abandoned crafts projects lying around the house... :D

      Thanks :) I like the little frilly bits on it too :) With the pictures it is getting terrible, she is so fast nowadays I probably take 50 pictures and get about 5 good ones... If that.

      Aww I love memory boxes! I bet that is a beautiful box :) I got my little one a memory box as well, but it is one of those plastic boxes you can get from Rymans, so not really much unfortunately :)

    The skirt is so cute. I have My Little Skirt of my childhood which is somewhat similar to this skirt. memories rewinded. Thanks for sharing. You baby is so cute. Keep exploring.

      Thanks - love that little skirt too - it is sort of similar shape even if not a colourful one. They do seem extremely comfortable on these types of skirts :)
