Hanging out with grandad
As my parents don't live in the UK our little one doesn't see them too often. We do try to Skype once a week, and we do try to visit them a few times a year. Most my annual leave is spent holidaying with them in Finland. And they do sometimes visit us here.
Sometimes it feels that it is too little. This summer it definitely felt like it was too little - when we went to visit them, Aili wouldn't cuddle her grandad. No way - she would just run away or turn to mummy everytime he came a bit too close. It took nearly a week before she allowed my dad to hold her. But after that they were like two peas in a pod.
When my dad was in London we went out, and this time she was a bit wary again. She hadn't really seen him for a while so was a bit suspicious of who this strange old man is. But it didn't take long until she warmed up to him again - this time it only took a couple of hours. And oh how much fun they had!
Like two peas in a pod, with the exact same smiles.

So sweet!! My youngest is a bit like this. He absolutely loves his Grandad but is very shy so it takes a long time before he will stop hiding behind my legs. He talks about his Grandad a lot and as soon as he's feeling confident he's away again and loves walking down the garden with him and playing...it's such a special relationship. (PS LOVE Finland, we were in Saariselka last year and wow, Cloudberries!!!)
ReplyDeleteI guess little ones can be like that sometimes, shy to begin with but then happy to play with them as soon as they feel comfortable again. And yes, I looked through your travel posts from Finland, it looked like you had lots of fun meeting Santa and all! I've done similar things when I was a kid, great experiences :)
DeleteSuch cute photos! We live abroad so we don't see the grandparents much either. It ALWAYS feels like it's too little, especially as my son (20 months) really adores them. I console myself with the fact that when we do get together, it's usually for at least a week, which gives the boy and the grandparents to get to know each other again in all sorts of ways. And then you get those grins! #ordinarymoments
ReplyDeleteThanks :) Similar to you, we often stay for a week and a half, so at least even if it isn't often enough, it is for an extended period of time. As much as annual leave allows anyway. I guess it is just one of those things - with the grandparents living close to us, we see them little but often, and the grandparents living far away we see them lots but rarely, so maybe it does balance itself out in the long run.
DeleteOh my goodness Sanna- what BEAUTIFUL photos! I hope you frame these and give these to your Dad for a present. x
ReplyDeleteThank you :) What a great idea! Last Christmas I made my Dad a photobook of her first 6 months, this year a framed picture would be lovely :)
